Step Stool

This was built for a tall, narrow bedroom in which the owner needed to reach high shelves and climb into a lofted bed.  The stool maintains stability on a tight footprint and the carpeted top provides comfort and traction.  The stool is also made entirely of leftovers; the wood from a nearby construction site, the carpet cut from a sample, and the grey paint left over from the shelving in the same room.

End Table

An advantage of using reclaimed wood is the surprising variations in color and grain texture.  For this end table, I was able to use various types and ages of wood to repeat a similar pattern on all four sides. The top lifts to reveal storage inside.

Radiator Cover

For this rental apartment, fixing or replacing the unfortunate-looking radiator was not an option. The radiator still worked, so the best solution was to simply hide it.

The Radiator cover was built using reclaimed structural lumber.  The imperfections of the wood help the piece look right at home in this century-old building, while the simple forms add a modern touch.  Openings at the top and base keep the heat flowing efficiently.

Desk with Storage

The desk was designed to support a variety of functions and provide plenty of storage. But a large piece of furniture does not have to be a pain to move. The six components stack together without any nails or screws, making the desk both mobile and versatile.

The various shelves were designed to fit standard-sized binders and paper, as well as a laptop computer.

The six components stack easily and remain sturdy.

Hi-Fi Credenza

This  credenza had been a great big old stereo cabinet  in extremely rough shape. The sound equipment was beyond repair, but I knew it would make great storage. I replaced the broken legs, inserted two shelves,  and moved the speaker fronts to the back to allude to the cabinet’s previous life.  I painted a few select places, but left the existing wood veneer intact – “imperfections” and all.

Kitchen Shelving

Two shelves hung side-by-side above kitchen cabinets provide storage for books. A slight reveal keeps the weight off the cabinets.  Although sized specifically for this space, the shelving was build in two sections to make it more versatile and mobile. In another setting, the shelves can be re-hung one above the other,  or stood vertically.
