A local architect acted as my client for residential loft space in Midtown Detroit. He requested an “experiential” home that reflects his eclectic style, as well as abundant outdoor space. Pulling in the exterior wall created two separate outdoor areas, and the various levels inside create distinctions between areas without disturbing the openness of the loft.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I designed the Spiral House to explore the division between the private areas of a home and those areas used for entertaining. The challenge was to allow for exceptions to this division and to contain it all in a unified structure. The red rectilinear form combined with the sweeping green curves emphasizes the interplay of these ideas.
